Somasteel Enhances Its Industrial Capabilities with the Launch of Modern Electric Furnaces
Follow-up
Somasteel has achieved a new step in its industrial journey by expanding its production site through the operation of modern electric furnaces. This development strengthens its industrial integration and bolsters the “Made in Morocco” brand, reaffirming the strategic role of mechanical and metal industries in the country’s economic transformation.
Strategic Industrial Investment
Somasteel specializes in the hot forging of low-carbon steel intended for producing rebar used in construction. This expansion was officially inaugurated on Monday, December 22, in the presence of the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, who emphasized the importance of the project for the national industry.
The investment amounts to 760 million dirhams, allowing the company to achieve an annual production capacity of up to 400,000 tons of metal profiles. The project will also lead to a doubling of direct employment from 250 to 850, in addition to creating approximately 1,800 indirect jobs, enhancing the economic and social development of the area surrounding the factory.
Integrated Production Line
Through this expansion, Somasteel completes the entire industrial value chain, from recycling scrap to producing rebar. This increases its competitiveness and reduces reliance on imports, aligning with national strategic objectives to enhance industrial sovereignty and encourage high-value local production.
Digitization and Industry 4.0
During the inauguration, Minister Ryad Mezzour praised the efforts made by Somasteel and industry stakeholders, stressing the importance of continuing to enhance competitiveness, quality, and productivity, while focusing on adopting Industry 4.0 technologies as a key lever for modernizing the sector and improving its performance.
Mechanical and Metal Industries as the Cornerstone of the National Economy
The Somasteel project highlights the central role of mechanical and metal industries in the Moroccan economy, comprising over 1,987 companies that account for 17% of the national industrial landscape and employ more than 75,000 people.
With revenues exceeding 84.7 billion dirhams, including over 7.7 billion dirhams in exports projected for 2024, these industries represent the fourth-largest contribution to the national industry, with a productivity rate of 202,000 dirhams per job, reflecting the efficiency of human resources and the sustainable growth potential of this strategic sector.
