Russia and Iran Launch Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the Coming Two Decades

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced yesterday in Moscow that the treaty of comprehensive strategic partnership with Iran represents a historic step in bilateral relations, affirming that it establishes frameworks for joint cooperation across all areas for the next two decades.

This statement came during his meeting with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, where Lavrov described the signing of the treaty and its entry into force as the most significant event in Russian-Iranian relations this year. He noted that the agreement solidifies the unique position of cooperation between the two countries and outlines the guiding principles for their joint policies over a 20-year period.

Lavrov also revealed the signing of the first “Consultation Plan” between the foreign ministries of the two countries for the period of 2026-2028, aimed at enhancing regular diplomatic coordination between Moscow and Tehran.

In response, the Iranian Foreign Minister emphasized that the relationship between Russia and Iran is comprehensive and integrated, covering political, economic, and other areas. He pointed out the regular consultations between the two countries on various issues and added that the treaty’s enactment has greatly boosted the development of bilateral cooperation. He commended Russia’s support for Iran during American and Israeli attacks on its nuclear facilities and stressed the need for continued future consultations on potential events.

It is worth noting that the comprehensive strategic partnership treaty came into effect in October 2025 after being signed in January of the same year, extending for twenty years to provide a broad institutional framework for bilateral cooperation between Russia and Iran.
