Official Clarification on the Overcrowding Situation at Kenitra Local Prison
The General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration has revealed details regarding the overcrowding situation at the local prison in Kenitra. This comes in response to a social media post on Facebook where an individual claimed severe overcrowding within the facility.
The delegation confirmed that the overcrowding at the Kenitra local prison is a factual issue, as the prison is designated for holding pre-trial detainees who are kept awaiting final court decisions. Despite these conditions, the delegation stated that efforts are being made to alleviate the impacts of overcrowding by transferring inmates with pending appeals to other correctional facilities. It indicated that recently, 600 pre-trial detainees were moved to the central prison in the same city, although this prison is primarily intended for individuals who have received definitive sentences for long-term terms.
As part of its efforts to reduce overcrowding, the delegation noted that it has begun constructing a new section in the Kenitra local prison, with a capacity of 750 beds, in addition to renovating the buildings designated for detention. This initiative is expected to help mitigate the problem in the near term.
These measures are part of the delegation’s strategy to ensure improved detention conditions and effectively and sustainably address the overcrowding issue.
