His Majesty King Mohammed VI has graciously approved the designation of December 9 as a national day for institutional mediation, in recognition of the role of the Ombudsman’s Office, according to a statement released by the Royal Cabinet.
This date was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the establishment of the Ombudsman’s Office in 2001, giving it a symbolic and legal significance that reflects the historical context of the royal message in which the King announced the foundation of this institution, alongside commemorating the issuance of the royal decree No. 1.01.298.
The statement indicated that this royal decision reflects exceptional royal attention to the roles of institutional mediation in promoting the principles of justice and fairness. It is an additional step in enhancing the culture of institutional mediation since the inception of the Ombudsman’s Office, as well as moving towards constitutionalizing the Ombudsman as an independent body for protecting human rights and contributing nationally to upholding the rule of law and promoting values of transparency and ethical governance.
The statement further explained that the national day for institutional mediation will serve as an annual occasion to highlight the virtues of institutional mediation, evoke best practices and comparative experiences, as well as appreciate the efforts made and develop proposals and recommendations aimed at strengthening citizen management based on justice and fairness.
