Driouch Vows to Eliminate Fishing Chaos and Enhance Fish Market Oversight
Zakia Driouch, the Secretary of State responsible for fishing, has vowed to eliminate the disorder in the artisanal fishing sector. She emphasized the ministry’s efforts to combat speculation in fish markets and protect coral reefs along national coastlines.
During a question-and-answer session in the House of Representatives, Driouch noted that the fishing sector in Dakhla has experienced significant setbacks due to weak monitoring and the absence of planning schemes, which have led to the bankruptcy of several units. She added that the government has implemented important measures since the turn of the millennium, through strategic projects such as “Halieutis” in 2009, to support scientific research, determine fishing efforts, regulate traditional fishing units, and revive fattening activities in Dakhla.
The government official indicated that there are currently 17,000 active boats in artisanal fishing, stressing that the ministry is tackling illegal vessels to ensure the sustainability of fish resources and protect fishermen’s investments. She also highlighted the pivotal role of local authorities in combating disorder, asserting that licenses are granted based on thorough studies of available fish stocks.
Regarding fish markets, Driouch outlined the ministry’s efforts to develop a network of wholesale markets and invigorate local markets to enhance fair competition and maintain reasonable prices. She pointed out that more than 70 fish product markets have been equipped, with 61 operating under a digital auction system.
She also underscored the importance of protecting coral reefs, particularly red coral, as a rare resource of high economic value. Areas for regulated exploitation have been designated in Larache, Assilah, and Cape Spartel, with a maximum exploitation ceiling set at 985 kilograms to preserve the ecological renewal of this marine resource.
Driouch concluded by affirming Morocco’s commitment to international agreements and treaties aimed at protecting marine biodiversity and coastlines, reinforcing sustainable development in fisheries, and safeguarding resources for future generations.
