ASLI Association Celebrates the Inclusion of Caftan in the World Heritage List, Viewing it as a Victory for Moroccan Identity

In a move that brings immense pride to Moroccans, UNESCO has approved the inclusion of the Moroccan caftan on the list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity, considering it one of the most enduring expressive symbols in Morocco’s collective memory. This international recognition solidifies centuries of creativity and craftsmanship shaped by the skilled hands of artisans, particularly women who have passed down its intricate art from generation to generation.

The ASLI Association, known for its work in preserving both tangible and intangible heritage, did not conceal its happiness at this honor, asserting that it pertains not just to the caftan as a garment, but encompasses all those who have preserved and developed its details over time.

Mona Benani, the president of the association, expressed gratitude, stating: “This recognition is a tribute to every woman and artisan who has revived the caftan’s spirit at every stage of its history. Thanks to them, this art has remained alive, thriving and flourishing within the community.”

The association also emphasized that this achievement reflects the strength of parallel cultural diplomacy, noting that civil society has become an essential partner in defending Moroccan heritage and presenting it to the world, whether through preparing files or promoting traditional industries as levers for identity and development. It praised the vital role of Moroccan official diplomacy, which has accompanied this journey with an active presence within UNESCO, confirming that this cooperation has added strength to the application.

This accolade reaffirms the caftan’s status as more than just a ceremonial garment; it serves as a profound memory that witnesses the richness of Moroccan civilization and its ability to renew through the ages, and it is a clear call to continue protecting this heritage for future generations.
