Algeria kicks off its Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Morocco 2025 with a comfortable victory against Sudan, winning three goals to nil. This win provided the “Desert Warriors” with an ideal start in terms of points but raised some questions regarding their overall performance and teamwork.
The script of the match was written early when Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring in the second minute after a rapid attack led by Amoura. He penetrated deep into the defense, passed to Boudawi inside the box, and the ball returned to the captain with a clever touch, allowing him to find the net with a beautifully curved shot that showcased his strong presence from the outset.
Mahrez further increased the lead by netting a second goal, taking advantage of a stunning outside pass from Amoura, which he received calmly before launching a precise ground shot that could not be stopped, giving Algeria a comfortable advantage before halftime.
In the second half, the Greens put the game beyond doubt with a third goal from Ibrahim Maaza, following a header from Baghdad Bounedjah. Maaza weaved past the defense and fired a left-footed shot inside the area, confirming Algeria’s superiority on the scoreline.
Despite the clean sheet, Algeria’s performance appeared less cohesive against a limited opponent, as fluidity sometimes went missing, and the team lacked stability in stretches of the match. This victory places Algeria at the top of the group, but they must present a more convincing version when they face Burkina Faso in the next round.
