The municipal council of Qalaat MGouna successfully contained the sanitation crisis and revitalized the city’s streets.
In response to the dissatisfaction among residents of Qalaat MGouna due to garbage accumulation stemming from a strike by sanitation workers over unpaid wages for more than three months, the Qalaat MGouna Municipality intervened urgently to address the crisis. The head of the municipal council, Nourredine Ait Haj, accompanied by his deputy Rashid Ivis, who is responsible for managing the sanitation sector, mobilized a group of temporary workers, truck drivers, and municipal employees to assist in the waste collection process.
In this context, the representative of His Majesty the King in the Qalaat MGouna region, Samir El Yzidi, along with the secretary general of the province, Mohamed Al Habib, played a crucial role in calming the atmosphere and softening the workers’ stances. Their direct interventions opened channels of dialogue with the workers and provided practical assurances to resolve the outstanding financial issues as soon as possible. This high-level administrative intervention had a noticeable impact in restoring trust and creating a conducive environment for workers to return to their duties.
Additionally, several workers from the company responsible for the sector resumed their tasks after the afternoon of Friday, November 28, as part of efforts to expedite the cleaning of the streets and empty the containers that had visibly overflowed.
This initiative generated widespread relief among the city’s residents, who viewed the step as a positive measure reflecting the commitment of various stakeholders, including authorities and the municipality, to tackle the consequences of the environmental crisis. Meanwhile, discussions are underway for the municipality to terminate its contract with the current company and engage an alternative firm that ensures service quality and continuity.
