Lafitit: Questioning the Integrity of Elections Requires Evidence, and Stringency is Necessary to Protect the Democratic Process

Minister of the Interior Abdelouafi Lafitit emphasized that any doubts cast on the integrity of elections through accusations of fraud circulating on social media or electronic platforms must be backed by clear evidence. He stressed that the legal provisions in this regard primarily aim to protect candidates from defamation, safeguard the rights of voters, and ensure the overall integrity of the electoral process.

During a detailed discussion on the electoral law projects within the Interior and Territorial Communities Committee at the House of Representatives on Thursday evening, Lafitit clarified that the government is open to any additional proposals for stringency if deemed necessary by the deputies. He considered the current formulation of the laws to be “the most appropriate” for safeguarding the electoral process.

The minister highlighted that the proposed measures are not part of what is known as “muzzle the mouths,” but rather a mechanism to protect institutions and candidates from smear campaigns, reminding that various democratic countries impose measures to protect their elections from external interference or attempts to disrupt. He added that Morocco is also required to be fortified against practices that may exploit the digital space to influence voters or undermine the integrity of the ballot.

Lafitit pointed out that these measures do not infringe upon freedom of expression or the journalistic profession, affirming that publishing critical articles or expressing opinions remains a guaranteed right. However, making accusations of fraud requires, in the case of legal action, presenting evidence based on the principle “the burden of proof lies on the claimant.”

The government official reiterated the importance of being stringent in combating any potential exploitation of artificial intelligence or foreign interference in elections, highlighting that the goal is to close the gaps against fabricated lies and protect elected officials, voters, and the legislative institution from disinformation campaigns.
