France Warns of Potential Clash with Russia: The Need to Prepare for Sacrifices is Essential
The remarks by General Fabien Mandon, Chief of Staff of the French Armed Forces, have sparked considerable debate after he urged France to be ready “to accept the loss of its sons” in the event of a war with Russia.
During a speech to mayors, Mandon emphasized that France possesses the economic, demographic, and industrial strength to deter Moscow. However, he noted what is lacking is a “spirit of strength” to accept human and economic sacrifices for its own defense.
He also cautioned against the possibility of military shocks within three to four years, warning of an escalation from Russian hybrid threats to direct military confrontations.
His statements elicited mixed political reactions; the left found them irresponsible, while the right deemed them exaggerated. Meanwhile, some military leaders considered his call part of defensive preparedness.
This warning comes amid rising European tensions with Russia and increased French defense spending, as efforts are underway to enhance societal readiness for any potential scenario.
