Foiling Attempt to Smuggle 591 Phones to Morocco via Algeciras Port
The Spanish Civil Guard at Algeciras Port successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of mobile phones destined for Morocco after stopping a truck driver heading towards the Port of Tangier Med.
During a routine inspection, the surveillance team grew suspicious of the truck upon noticing signs of tampering in the vehicle’s rear wall. This prompted them to dismantle parts of the body, resulting in the discovery of 591 mobile phones meticulously hidden within a double bottom in the rear section of the truck.
Initial investigations revealed that two of the seized phones were reported stolen, prompting the driver’s arrest on charges of possession of stolen goods and attempting to smuggle them across the border.
The confiscated phones were handed over to the relevant customs authorities, while both the driver and the seized shipment were referred to the Spanish judicial authorities for further investigation and necessary legal actions.
