This week, the municipal stadium in Kenitra hosted two friendly matches for the Moroccan national under-23 team against Djibouti, with the “Lions” securing victories of 6-0 in the first match and 7-0 in the second, as part of their preparation for the Arab Cup in Qatar.
This event has once again brought attention to the historic stadium and sparked discussions about its readiness to host larger football events, including friendly matches for African teams before the Africa Cup of Nations. Its strategic location, close to the highway and train station, along with being situated in a city that connects major urban centers such as Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, and Fez, serves as a real advantage.
Currently, the ball is in the court of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, which is responsible for the renovation efforts. There is an expectation for a strong push to accelerate the pace of the construction work to ensure that the stadium is ready with all its facilities as soon as possible.
If the project is completed as planned, the benefits will not be limited to just the Kenitra club, but will extend to youth teams and the hosting of clubs and national teams from abroad, with the potential to organize international tournaments and leagues that will enhance Morocco’s presence on the continental and global football stage.
Kenitra has always been a city of football, and its municipal stadium is well-remembered in history. Restoring it to its full glory could mark the beginning of a new and exciting chapter.
