Washington Welcomes UN Security Council Decision on Western Sahara, Describing Support for Autonomy as “Historic”
The United States has welcomed the United Nations Security Council’s decision supporting the autonomy initiative as a final solution to the Western Sahara issue, calling the vote a “historic event” that represents a “real opportunity” to end the long-standing stalemate and achieve regional peace and stability.
In a statement before the council, the U.S. representative stated that the country “welcomes this historic vote, seizing a unique opportunity to achieve the long-awaited peace in Western Sahara.” The representative praised the diplomatic efforts of UN envoy Staffan de Mistura and highlighted the “vital” role played by the United Nations in advancing the political process.
Continued Support for Autonomy and MINURSO Extension
The American official announced continued U.S. support for the MINURSO mission in fulfilling its tasks, confirming Washington’s endorsement for the extension of its mandate until October 2026. He expressed gratitude to council members for the spirit of consensus that prevailed during the discussion and drafting of the resolution.
The representative emphasized the United States’ determination to support regional peace and stability, reaffirming Washington’s commitment to a “realistic and mutually acceptable solution.”
Call for Serious Dialogue
In a related context, the U.S. official urged all parties to “invest in the upcoming phase” to engage in a “serious and constructive dialogue.” He affirmed that this dialogue should be based on the Moroccan initiative for autonomy, regarded as the “only practical foundation” for a final resolution to the conflict.
The American representative concluded his remarks with cautious optimism, stressing that “regional peace is achievable this year,” and confirming Washington’s readiness “to make every possible effort to facilitate progress toward lasting peace and sustainable prosperity for the peoples of the region.”
