UN Report Exposes Polisario: An Outlaw Militia Impeding Peace and Threatening Civilians with Algerian Complicity

In a shocking report revealing the true face of the Polisario Front, the UN Secretary-General unveiled before the Security Council the practices of the separatist group that resemble those of armed militias operating outside the law. He accused them of undermining peace efforts, threatening civilian security, and systematically obstructing the work of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), in a blatant challenge to international legitimacy and a clear disregard for the international community’s efforts to find a final solution to the manufactured conflict over Western Sahara.

The report held a mirror to the bloody reality of the Polisario, revealing that it poses a genuine security threat to the region. It documented their direct aggressive actions, including the launch of four missiles on June 27 near a MINURSO site in Smara. The General Command of the Royal Armed Forces clearly described thisattack as “terrorist and cowardly.”

Worse still, the front did not content itself with this terrorist act but responded to inquiries from the UN mission with evasive and ambiguous remarks, neither adopting nor denying the attack, reflecting its stark disregard for international laws and a lack of responsibility towards lives and UN facilities.

The Polisario militias continue to shoot at civilians in a blatant violation of human rights, with the latest incident occurring on November 9, 2024, in a civilian area in Mahbes during a social event, prompting an official warning from Morocco, which affirmed its full and legitimate right to take decisive measures to deter these recurrent provocations that threaten its national security.

The report also debunked the repeated lies of the separatist front, which claims that its activities are limited to “civilian areas.” MINURSO documented the presence of armed elements at mining sites east of the defensive wall, exposing the malicious use of civilians as a cover for their dubious military actions.

The United Nations did not hide its deep concern over the behavior of the Polisario, which has crossed all red lines, especially as it continues to impose a blockade on the movements of MINURSO, preventing its helicopters from flying since 2020, and refusing to allow investigations into nine serious incidents, in a blatant attempt to cover up its crimes.

Conversely, the report highlighted the growing strong international support for the Moroccan position, as the United States reiterated its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, considering the autonomy initiative the only realistic framework for a solution. Britain followed suit, viewing the Moroccan proposal as a serious and credible basis for settling the dispute.

The report also exposed the duplicitous and deceitful role of the Algerian regime, which continues to arm and direct the Polisario from behind the scenes while claiming to distance itself from the conflict, in stark contradiction to its practices on the ground and its unconditional support for a separatist militia that employs methods akin to extremist groups.

Despite these provocations, Morocco remains committed to the path of peace and development, pumping significant investments into the Southern Regions, enhancing infrastructure, and improving the livelihoods of residents, while the Polisario resorts solely to threats, arms, and empty slogans.

The UN Secretary-General’s report constituted a resounding slap to both the Polisario and those backing it, confirming that they have become nothing more than a destructive tool in the hands of a rigid Algerian regime, while Morocco confidently moves towards the future, supported by international legitimacy and consistent positions that regard autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the only viable solution.
