International Bank: Morocco Achieves Breakthrough in Early Childhood Education as Girls’ Enrollment Reaches 93%

In a significant development for early childhood education in Morocco, a World Bank report revealed that the enrollment rate of girls in pre-school education has risen from 25% in 2017 to 93% in 2024.

This remarkable increase is part of the national goal aimed at achieving universal access to early childhood education for children aged 4 to 5 by 2028.

The report highlighted that this progress was made possible through a combination of targeted measures, including the creation of new positions, extensive community mobilization, and the expansion of early education services in rural areas. More than 9,500 new educators have been employed, mainly in rural regions.

Nationally, the enrollment rate in early childhood education increased from 45% to 80% between 2018 and 2024, while in rural areas, it surged from 33% to 91%.

This advancement contributes significantly to reducing gender disparities in education, allowing girls to start their educational journeys on a better footing. Morocco aligns with major international recommendations concerning the universalization of early childhood education through this dynamic.

However, despite this progress, several challenges remain, chiefly ensuring the quality of early childhood education, achieving comprehensive coverage across all regions, and linking access rates with effective educational outcomes. Authorities and their partners, including the World Bank, emphasize the importance of continuing efforts to transform access into quality and sustainable early education.
