The special advisor to President Trump reaffirms U.S. support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara
In a statement, U.S. Advisor for African Affairs, Mac Sad Boulis, affirmed that the United States is renewing its steadfast support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, stating that Morocco’s autonomy initiative is “the only basis for a just and lasting solution” to this regional dispute.
In an interview with Al-Sharq news channel, Boulis recalled the clear and explicit recognition made by former U.S. President Donald Trump of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern regions, also announcing the imminent opening of a U.S. consulate in the southern areas of the kingdom.
The American advisor emphasized that “the time has come for a definitive and lasting solution” to this conflict that has persisted for over fifty years, referencing the “historic” speech delivered by King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the Throne Day, in which he reiterated Morocco’s firm commitment to dialogue with Algeria.
As the United Nations Security Council prepares to discuss the issue of the Moroccan Sahara soon, Boulis clarified that the United States is working with several European partners to reach a final and consensual solution to this matter within the framework of the United Nations.
Boulis concluded his statement by saying: “We are more optimistic than ever about the possibility of reaching a lasting solution to this dispute.”
