The first edition of “Piang MedDays” in Africa is hosted in Tangier
This Wednesday morning, the Palace of Arts and Culture in Tangier marked the launch of the sixth edition of the Mediterranean Days of Port and Coastal Engineering (PIANC MedDays 2025), organized by the Ministry of Equipment and Water, featuring significant participation from international officials and experts in coastal and port engineering.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, alongside Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development; Francisco Esteban Lefer, President of the PIANC Global Association; Senna El Omrani, President of the Moroccan Association of Maritime and Port Engineering; and Mostafa Faris, Director General of the National Ports Agency, along with several diplomatic and academic figures and representatives from both public and private sectors.
In his opening speech, Nizar Baraka expressed pride in Morocco hosting, for the first time on the African continent, this prestigious scientific event organized in partnership with the Moroccan Association of Maritime and Port Engineering (AMIPM) and the International Association for Maritime and River Infrastructure (PIANC International).
The minister emphasized that holding this edition in Tangier, “which represents Africa’s gateway to Europe,” embodies Morocco’s leadership in port engineering and reflects its commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and innovation in the face of climate change challenges.
Baraka further stated that the current phase necessitates a new approach to port management based on energy transition, digitization, and enhancing safety and sustainability, highlighting that Moroccan ports have become “a fundamental lever for economic development and a vital space for innovation.”
Several cooperation and partnership agreements were signed between national and international institutions aimed at exchanging expertise and promoting scientific research in coastal engineering and sustainable port infrastructure management.
The events of this global meeting will continue over two days, alongside the organization of the third edition of “Infrastructure Day,” overseen by the National Ports Agency, which will showcase major port projects in the Kingdom, such as the Atlantic Dakhla Port, the Nador West Med Port, and the Port of Casablanca.
This edition serves as an opportunity to highlight Morocco’s leadership in maritime infrastructure and the major projects that have established the Kingdom as a strategic hub in maritime transport and international trade.
