Road Traffic Results in 12 Deaths and Thousands of Injuries in Moroccan Cities Over One Week
Moroccan cities have witnessed a worrying toll from traffic accidents, with 12 people losing their lives and 2,983 others sustaining varying degrees of injuries, including 125 serious cases, during the week from September 29 to October 5, according to the General Directorate of National Security.
The directorate explained that the 2,277 recorded accidents within urban areas predominantly stem from human errors, chief among them being the inattentiveness of drivers and pedestrians, excessive speed, and failure to respect right-of-way rules, along with other violations such as changing direction without signaling, driving under the influence, and disregarding traffic signals.
In the context of monitoring and enforcement efforts, the security services recorded 38,899 traffic violations, of which 5,911 cases were forwarded to the public prosecution. Additionally, 32,988 fines were collected, totaling approximately 7.27 million dirhams.
Monitoring operations also led to the confiscation of 3,858 vehicles at the municipal impound lot, the seizure of 5,911 documents, and the suspension of 382 vehicles due to serious violations.
These figures highlight the ongoing crisis on urban roads despite intensive awareness and monitoring efforts, underscoring the urgent need to promote a culture of road safety and instill responsible behavior among road users.
