Rabat Among the Top 5 Global Tourist Destinations for 2026 According to “National Geographic”
The Moroccan capital, Rabat, has achieved a prestigious position in “National Geographic” magazine’s ranking of the best 25 tourist destinations worldwide for 2026, coming in fifth globally. This places it ahead of prominent tourist cities such as Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Vancouver (Canada), Maui (Hawaii), the Basque Country (Spain), and Manila (Philippines).
The renowned American magazine highlighted that Rabat embodies a unique model that combines authenticity and modernity. The city features ancient alleys stretching through the old town, dating back to the 12th century, alongside contemporary architectural landmarks like the Mohammed VI Tower, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the capital, and the Royal Theater of Rabat, designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid in a modern style that reflects the kingdom’s cultural openness.
The report also spotlighted the archaeological site of Chellah, which merges Roman and Islamic histories, recently reopened after extensive renovations. Additionally, the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art showcases over 500 artworks that reflect the diversity of Moroccan and African creativity, featuring prominent artists such as photographer and designer Hassan Hajjaj.
The magazine praised the cultural vibrancy of the capital, noting that Rabat has become a favored destination for literature and art enthusiasts, hosting cultural events throughout the year, particularly at the National Library. It has also been designated by UNESCO as the World Capital of Books for 2026.
This annual ranking, based on evaluations from explorers, photographers, and editors at the magazine, underscores Rabat’s growing global prominence as a city that blends a rich historical legacy with modern urban renewal, securing its place among the top tourist destinations worthy of exploration in the coming year.
