Morocco has strengthened its position as one of the leading suppliers of watermelon to the European Union during the 2024/2025 season, maintaining its third place with exports amounting to approximately 158.86 million kilograms, representing 9.6% of total European imports, with financial returns nearing 177.44 million euros.

This season, Moroccan watermelon has stood out as the most expensive in the European market, with an average price of 1.12 euros per kilogram, surpassing Spanish prices by about 33% and Italian prices by 75%, reflecting the strong demand for the Moroccan product and European importers’ trust in its high quality.

Meanwhile, Spain continues to lead as the top supplier, with over 483.6 million kilograms valued at around 407.9 million euros, followed by Italy with 184.9 million kilograms and 117.6 million euros.

According to market data, total EU watermelon imports reached about 1.65 billion kilograms with a total value of approximately 1.3 billion euros, at an average price of 0.79 euros per kilogram, making Moroccan watermelon the most expensive and distinctive on the continent.

Countries like Germany and the Netherlands have also made notable contributions through re-export activities, while Greece and Turkey follow behind.

Despite the decline in exports from many producing countries in recent years, Morocco has continued to enhance its presence in the European market thanks to developments in production techniques, the quality of cultivated varieties, and strict adherence to European environmental and food standards, positioning it as a strategic partner and strong competitor in the global fresh fruit market.
