Morocco and Russia Deepen Their Strategic Partnership During Nasser Bourita’s Visit to Moscow
Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, met with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in Moscow as part of the deepening strategic partnership that has linked Morocco and Russia since 2016. The meeting witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries’ ministries, affirming both sides’ commitment to enhancing political, economic, and multilateral cooperation.
The two ministers praised the roles played by King Mohammed VI and President Vladimir Putin, highlighting how their strategic vision supports the growing bilateral relationship. They also emphasized the quality of political dialogue between Rabat and Moscow and their shared ambition to maximize the partnership in line with available cooperation opportunities.
Following the meeting, the two ministers signed a memorandum to establish a joint Moroccan-Russian working committee between their foreign ministries, aimed at evaluating the partnership, proposing new areas of cooperation, and following up on the implementation of existing agreements.
This committee seeks to launch practical projects with high added value, particularly in the fields of economy, energy, agriculture, and security, in addition to enhancing political consultations on major regional and international issues.
The ministers also discussed a number of regional and international issues of mutual concern, particularly the situation in North Africa, the Sahel region, and the Middle East, reaffirming the necessity of maintaining regular political dialogue between the two countries within the framework of ongoing strategic dialogue.
During his visit, Nasser Bourita chaired the eighth session of the Moroccan-Russian Joint Committee with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev, covering various areas of cooperation, including energy, agriculture, fishing, training, and scientific research.
Since King Mohammed VI ascended the throne, Moroccan-Russian relations have witnessed significant growth, marked by two official visits from the king to Moscow (in 2002 and 2016) and President Putin’s visit to Morocco in 2006, establishing a relationship based on political trust and aligned strategic interests.
