Midaoui Reveals Surge in Student Enrollment in Private Universities and Record Growth in Higher Education

Azeddine Midaoui, Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation, announced a continued increase in the enrollment of students in private higher education institutions in Morocco. During the 2024-2025 academic year, private universities welcomed approximately 102,462 students, registering a record growth rate of 12.5%.

This announcement came as the minister presented projections for the 2025-2026 academic year in front of the Education, Culture, and Communication Committee of the House of Representatives. Data forecasts a total enrollment in higher education to rise to 1,309,900 students, with an expected growth rate of 4.8%.

The data indicated that public universities received 1,144,801 students this season, accounting for 87% of the total student population, with a growth rate of 3.8%. Among these, open-access institutions attracted the majority, accommodating 928,195 students (81% of the total) with a growth rate of 2.5%, while limited-access institutions experienced a significant rise of 10.3%, admitting 216,606 students (19% of the total).

The presentation also highlighted notable growth in private institutions and non-university higher education establishments, which recorded 102,462 students (8% of the total) with a growth rate of 12.5%. Meanwhile, public higher education institutions not affiliated with universities hosted 62,537 students (5% of the total) with a growth rate of 10.3%.

In terms of the distribution of new students by fields and specializations, the legal, economic, and social sciences majors dominate, representing around 50% of total enrollments, with a growth rate of 2%.

These figures reflect the ongoing growth and diversification in Morocco’s higher education system, confirming the increasing demand for private universities and the most sought-after academic fields.
