The Marrakech Court of First Instance decided today, Friday, to prosecute the first group of detainees following the riots that occurred in the Sidi Youssef Ben Ali neighborhood of the city. These events erupted amid protests called by what is referred to as “Generation Z,” before spiraling into widespread violence and vandalism after the infiltration of instigators.
According to judicial sources, this concerns 34 individuals, including 19 adult defendants and 15 minors. The prosecution decided to pursue the adults in custody and refer them directly to the initial sessions, while the minors were sent to a juvenile judge.
The list of charges against the detainees includes:
– Insulting members of the public forces while performing their duties
– Committing acts of violence resulting in injuries among security personnel
– Vandalizing property designated for public use
– Rioting and inciting the commission of offenses through public means
– Contributing to organizing an unauthorized demonstration
– Causing damage to others’ property
– Throwing stones and possessing weapons in conditions that threaten the safety of persons and property
In the same context, 15 other defendants appeared before the public prosecutor at the Marrakech Court of First Instance regarding the events in Tamansourt, which included attempts to storm a gendarmerie station and set fire to its equipment and vehicles. Due to the severity of these actions, they were referred to the public prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Marrakech for further proceedings, as the events may entail criminal implications.
