China Launches eSIM Services Nationally
The three major telecommunications companies in China—China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom—have officially launched eSIM (electronic SIM) services nationwide.
China Telecom announced that eSIM services are now available across the country. Consumers can activate the services in physical stores or make online reservations through the company’s app before visiting a specific store for activation.
On its part, China Mobile reported that it would offer eSIM services for a complete range of products, including smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and automotive devices.
The eSIM service integrates the functionality of traditional physical SIM cards through a chip embedded in the phone. Without the need for a physical SIM card, users of phones that support eSIM can remotely download their mobile numbers and load them onto the eSIM in their devices.
eSIM devices provide the same functionalities as phones with physical SIM cards, including voice calls, mobile data, and text messaging services.
