Barcelona Considers Friendly Match in Morocco if Knocked Out of Champions League Early
The Spanish newspaper Sport has reported that FC Barcelona has recently received an official offer to play a friendly match in Morocco. This move is part of the club’s efforts to enhance its financial revenues and improve its economic standing.
The report clarifies that Barcelona’s management is seriously considering the offer but will only agree to the match if the team exits the Champions League in the Round of 16 or earlier. It noted that if the team continues its journey in the continental tournament, the idea will be postponed until after the current season ends.
A source from within the club confirmed to the newspaper that “this is still just a proposed idea, and not part of the team’s current plans,” indicating that the concept is still far from actual implementation.
Barcelona aims to achieve immediate financial returns from such matches, which could help alleviate economic pressures and comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. However, the players do not seem particularly enthusiastic about such trips following a long and intense season, similar to last year’s Asian tour in South Korea and Japan.
Morocco is considered a preferred destination for Barcelona due to its proximity to Catalonia (about an hour and a half by plane) and the significant popularity the Catalan club holds among Moroccan fans.
Despite the proposal remaining on the table, consensus has yet to be reached among the various parties, making the final decision regarding the match contingent on the team’s performance in Europe and upcoming financial and sporting circumstances.
