Turkey has announced the purchase of 225 American aircraft

Turkish Airlines announced on Friday that it has confirmed an order for 225 planes from American company Boeing, following the first visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the White House since 2019.

The order includes 150 aircraft to be delivered between 2029 and 2034, with an option to purchase 75 more, the company said in a statement without disclosing the value of the deal.

The statement added, “The board of directors decided to purchase a total of 75 Boeing 787-9 and 787-10 aircraft, with 50 confirmed orders and an option for 25 more, with delivery scheduled between 2029 and 2034,” as well as “150 Boeing 737-8/10 Max aircraft, including 100 confirmed orders with an option for 50 more.”

The company noted that negotiations are underway with Rolls Royce and GE Aerospace for engines and maintenance services for the 787 aircraft.

It confirmed: “Through these orders, we aim to equip our entire fleet with next-generation aircraft by 2035, enhancing efficiency and supporting an annual growth rate of 6%.”

President Erdoğan held a two-hour discussion with his American counterpart Donald Trump on Thursday at the White House. This was Erdoğan’s first visit to the U.S. presidential residence since 2019.

The administration of former President Joe Biden had refrained from hosting Erdoğan at the White House.

In December 2023, Turkish Airlines announced an order to purchase 355 aircraft from Airbus, Boeing’s main European competitor.
