Vienna – The International Nuclear Security and Safety Network held its eleventh general meeting today in Vienna, presided over by Saïd Melin, Director of the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security. This meeting took place alongside the 69th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (September 15-19).

In his opening speech, Melin emphasized the importance of the network as a platform for cooperation, the exchange of expertise, and the enhancement of organizational capacities among member states. He stressed the need for unified efforts to address shared challenges and to ensure the independence and rigor of authorities in adhering to regulatory frameworks while supporting the expansion of nuclear and radiological activities.

The session featured the participation of Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Attendees discussed notable topics, including the development of small modular reactors, emergency preparedness, and the integration of cybersecurity and artificial intelligence within regulatory systems, as well as promoting diversity and inclusion through initiatives like Women in Nuclear.

Participants highlighted the progress made in capacity building, particularly through self-assessment mechanisms, the development of academic programs, and the establishment of nuclear and radiological leadership schools. This session provided regional and thematic networks the opportunity to showcase their achievements, reflecting the vibrancy of the international network.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Melin praised the commitment of the delegations, asserting that nuclear and radiological safety and security are global public goods requiring increased international solidarity. A work plan for 2025-2026 was adopted, reinforcing the pivotal role of the international network in guiding member states toward a more secure and sustainable nuclear future.

With this leadership presence, the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security continues to establish itself as a key regional and international player, contributing to the Kingdom’s prominence and enhancing nuclear safety and security standards globally.
