A Spanish newspaper has reported that the Chinese company Gotion High-Tech will establish the first large-scale factory of its kind in Africa for producing electric vehicle batteries in the city of Kenitra, northwest Morocco. The investment is expected to reach $6.5 billion, with production slated to begin in the third quarter of 2026.

The project will initially have an annual production capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours, with a gradual expansion plan aiming for 100 gigawatt-hours. The factory will cover the production of battery cells and electrode materials (cathodes and anodes), which will enhance Morocco’s independence in the supply chain and reduce costs.

According to the same source, 85% of the production will be directed toward the European Union, given the increasing demand for electric transportation solutions. The choice of Kenitra aligns with the presence of an industrial cluster that includes major companies such as Renault and Stellantis.

Additionally, in June 2025, the Chinese company KUBCO opened a new factory in the Jorf Lasfar region to produce components for lithium-ion batteries, further strengthening Morocco’s clean energy industrial ecosystem.

This initiative solidifies the country’s position as a key player in the global industry, especially after the automotive sector became Morocco’s leading export in 2023, with export values reaching $14 billion and an annual production capacity of 700,000 vehicles.
