Sébastien Lecornu Takes Office as French Prime Minister in New Political Move

The French presidency appointed Sébastien Lecornu as Prime Minister on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, succeeding François Bayrou, who was ousted following a vote of no confidence in the National Assembly. Lecornu, 39, previously served as Minister of Defense and has extensive experience in local administration and French overseas territories.

Lecornu is known for leading the Great National Debate, initiated in response to the Yellow Vest movement, relying on a consultative and open approach with various stakeholders. According to the presidency, his first task is to engage with political forces in Parliament to secure the approval of the state budget and reach agreements on upcoming decisions before proposing the formation of his government to President Emmanuel Macron.

The new government’s priorities focus on strengthening France’s independence and power, serving citizens, and ensuring political and institutional stability to maintain the unity of the country. The ruling coalitions from the right and center welcomed his appointment, while the opposition expressed reservations.

Through his account on platform X, Lecornu affirmed that he would work with “humility” and “determination” to achieve set objectives, adding, “We are at work, with humility, and we will do everything necessary to succeed.”

Reaching a consensus on the budget bill, expected to be adopted by December 31, presents a major challenge for the government, as Lecornu seeks to balance economic stimulus with financial stability. Political observers have regarded this appointment as a practical and promising step, praising his negotiation skills and ability to build agreements among diverse parties.
