Water wastage occurs in Kenitra… Who pays the price?

A main street in Kenitra witnessed an explosion of a primary drinking water pipeline today, Thursday, due to ongoing work in the area. This resulted in a large amount of water leaking and going to waste for several hours without any immediate intervention.

The incident sparked widespread discontent among the city’s residents and road users, who found themselves unable to access drinking water amid the resource leak, which exacerbated their frustration, especially given Morocco’s ongoing national drought crisis.

This event raises questions about the lack of immediate response from the regional multi-service company responsible for managing water and electricity services in Rabat-Salé-Kenitra, highlighting the weakness of intervention mechanisms in such incidents.

Local sources confirmed that the water leak continued for a duration without the presence of maintenance teams, while residents expressed their concerns about the significant waste of drinking water, emphasizing that the incident reflects shortcomings in monitoring and quick maintenance responses.

This incident comes at a time when the government is implementing a national strategy to rationalize water resource consumption and ensure citizens have access to water, making the failure to intervene by the regional company even more apparent and concerning.

Experts assert that such incidents require prompt action to avoid water loss and ensure continuous supply. The pressing question remains: who will be held accountable for the wastage of drinking water in a city facing a severe drought?
