The New York Court of Appeals Upholds $83.3 Million Fine Against Trump in E. Jean Carroll Defamation Case

The New York Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit upheld a ruling on Monday, September 8, 2025, against former President Donald Trump, imposing a fine of $83.3 million in favor of writer and journalist E. Jean Carroll in a defamation case.

The amount is divided into $18.3 million for damages related to emotional distress and reputation, and $65 million in punitive damages aimed at penalizing the severity of his statements.

The court deemed the penalty “fair and reasonable,” emphasizing the “shocking and clear malice” in Trump’s remarks while rejecting the legal argument presented by his defense regarding presidential immunity.

Carroll, who previously received $5 million in a separate case in 2023, has achieved another judicial victory, while Trump retains the option to appeal to the Supreme Court if he chooses to continue his legal battle.
