CAF Moves Egypt vs. Djibouti Match to Morocco Instead of Cairo

Sources within the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have revealed that the match between the Egyptian national team and Djibouti, scheduled as part of the ninth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, may be relocated to Morocco instead of Cairo, pending an official announcement.

The match, set for October 6, represents a crucial opportunity for the Pharaohs to secure direct qualification after their goalless draw against Burkina Faso last Tuesday, which postponed the confirmation of their qualification until the next round.

CAF sources stated that the decision to move the match to Morocco aims to avoid any objections from competing teams, particularly Burkina Faso, and to ensure that the qualifiers proceed in a fair atmosphere.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian Football Association is working to communicate with Djibouti to discuss the possibility of hosting the match at Cairo Stadium, with Egypt covering all costs for hosting the visiting team and its coaching staff.

Currently, Egypt leads Group A with 20 points and needs a victory over Djibouti by any score to guarantee direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

FIFA noted that the match between Egypt and Burkina Faso had limited opportunities, with Burkina Faso’s goalkeeper Hervé Koffi saving a powerful shot from Mahmoud Trezeguet and a goal for Egypt being disallowed for offside, emphasizing that the next round will be decisive for the Pharaohs in the qualification race.
