Australia Underwater: A 2050 Warning

Climate change poses devastating threats to Australia, according to the first national climate risk assessment published by the government on Monday. The report reveals that approximately 1.5 million Australians will be directly exposed to rising sea levels by 2050.

The report, which identified 63 major climate threats, explains that a 1.5-degree Celsius increase in global temperatures will cause average sea levels to rise by 14 centimeters, raising the percentage of coastal communities classified as high-risk areas from 8% to 18%. In the long term, nearly 3 million people could be affected by 2090.

The projections are not limited to coastal risks; the report anticipates a dramatic increase in heat-related deaths, with predictions of 444% in Sydney and 423% in Darwin if the world continues on its current path towards a 3-degree Celsius increase. It also warns of more frequent Category 4 and 5 cyclones, recurring wildfires, and heightened health risks associated with mosquitoes and ticks.

Australian Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen warned of particularly “heavy consequences” for rural areas, which will be “on the front line” facing the impacts of climate disruption.

Economically, losses could reach AUD 611 billion by 2050, rising to AUD 770 billion by 2090 if strong measures are not taken to mitigate these threats.
