Moroccan Makes Headlines by Being Elected President of the International Nuclear Associations Council

In a significant move reflecting the growing presence of Moroccan expertise on international platforms, Khadija Bendama has been elected as President of the International Nuclear Associations Council. This decision was made during the council’s general assembly held today, Tuesday, in Vienna, on the sidelines of the 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

This appointment marks a global milestone, as Bendama becomes the first woman in the council’s history to hold this prestigious position. It represents a critical step in promoting female representation within international nuclear bodies and simultaneously highlights Morocco’s advanced standing in strategic and forward-thinking sectors.

Bendama’s rise within the International Nuclear Associations Council follows a structured pathway, starting from the role of Secretary-General, progressing through the positions of First and Second Vice-President, and culminating in the Presidency, followed by the Past President role. This career path signifies a five-year commitment to fostering international governance in the nuclear sector.

Currently, Bendama serves as the Director of Nuclear Safety and Security Auditing Operations at the National Center for Energy, Nuclear Sciences, and Technology (CNESTEN). She also leads the Women in Nuclear Organization in Morocco, is a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Council of the global Women in Nuclear Organization, and serves as the President of the Women in Nuclear Organization for Africa. Additionally, she is the Vice-President of the Arab Network of Women in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Security.

Her appointment was witnessed by representatives from various countries across all five continents, including Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Mexico, Pakistan, Slovakia, and the United States.

The International Nuclear Associations Council, established on November 11, 1990, is a non-governmental organization recognized by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the United Nations Environment Programme. It comprises nuclear associations from around the world, representing over 80,000 nuclear professionals, and serves as a global platform for consultation and unifying visions among experts and stakeholders in this strategic sector.

This appointment again embodies the International Nuclear Associations Council’s commitment to values of diversity and inclusive leadership while enhancing Morocco’s position as a proactive partner in the development of international nuclear cooperation.
