40 Countries Renew Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over the Sahara and Autonomy Initiative at the Human Rights Council

During the general debate of the sixtieth session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the representative of the Central African Republic, on behalf of a group of 40 countries, reaffirmed steadfast support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern territories and for the autonomy initiative, which the Security Council considers a serious and credible solution.

The group’s representative emphasized that interaction between member states, the Human Rights Council, and the High Commissioner should remain bilateral and preserve its original character, free from any unconstructive political exploitation within the council.

The speaker reviewed the diplomatic and economic progress taking place in the southern regions, pointing out the opening of numerous consulates in Dakhla and Laayoune, considering this evidence of increasing international support and as a lever to enhance cooperation, investment, and regional and continental development.

The Central African Republic representative confirmed that the issue of the Moroccan Sahara remains within the primary jurisdiction of the Security Council, highlighting the priority of the autonomy initiative as a practical and realistic solution for achieving a lasting political settlement, while reiterating support for efforts to resume the political process under United Nations auspices, particularly through the Geneva roundtable discussions, and in accordance with Resolution 2756 adopted in October 2024.

He concluded by reaffirming the commitment of the group of forty countries to a peaceful resolution of the conflict based on consensus and the Moroccan initiative, urging delegations to review the full text of the statement.
