The United States Restricts Entry of Palestinian Officials to New York Ahead of UN Meetings

The U.S. State Department announced on Friday that some Palestinian officials are prohibited from entering New York to attend next month’s United Nations General Assembly meetings. This decision follows the announcement by several Western countries of their intention to officially recognize Palestine as a state, amid objections from the United States and Israel. The department did not disclose the names of the targeted officials.

Washington justified its decision by claiming that the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization have failed to renounce terrorism and have lobbied for unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state. Palestinian officials denied these allegations, asserting that decades of negotiations have failed to end Israeli occupation and establish an independent Palestinian state.

The American decision may reduce the size of the Palestinian delegation at the summit, where the United Kingdom, France, Australia, and Canada have announced their official recognition of the State of Palestine. This step reflects Western dissatisfaction with Israel’s war on Gaza and settlement expansion in the West Bank, which have resulted in a widespread humanitarian crisis.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas intends to travel to New York, but his office deemed the visa decisions a violation of the UN headquarters agreement, which guarantees the entry of foreign diplomats. The United States confirmed that the restrictions would not apply to the Permanent Mission of Palestine to the UN, while the international organization indicated it would address the matter with Washington in accordance with the agreement.
