A Moroccan-Norwegian Agreement with UNESCO Office to Enhance Journalist Protection and Address Digital Threats

The UNESCO Office for the Maghreb and the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Rabat have signed a new strategic partnership agreement aimed at strengthening the capacities of journalists, media professionals, youth leaders, and media institutions in Morocco.

This agreement comes amid rising levels of misinformation online and increasing digital threats and harassment, exacerbated by rapid advancements in artificial intelligence technologies, making the need for a safe and resilient media environment more urgent.

This project is part of a three-year collaboration intended to provide concrete and sustainable solutions that contribute to strengthening the media’s role as a key player in a democratic society. The project focuses on equipping journalists and young people with modern skills in media and information literacy, while also enhancing their knowledge in the field of artificial intelligence, particularly concerning countering fake news and tackling digital harassment and cyber threats.

The project also aims to strengthen the institutional framework of Moroccan media by assisting its institutions in developing and adopting effective preventive policies that address emerging digital challenges. Over 200 journalists, 150 young individuals, and 15 trainers are expected to benefit directly from the project’s activities, which will also support at least 10 media institutions in adopting appropriate security protocols.

This alliance reflects the commitment of UNESCO and the Kingdom of Norway to support freedom of expression, ensure the safety of journalists, and promote the presence of responsible and robust media, which are foundational elements of democratic societies.
