Japan Reaffirms Its Consistent Stance on Not Recognizing the Polisario Mercenaries

In preparation for the upcoming Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) to be held this year in Yokohama, Japan has reiterated its firm position of not recognizing the separatist entity, emphasizing that its presence at TICAD meetings does not alter its steadfast policy. These statements from Japanese officials serve as a clear clarification of their country’s position, which aligns with its legal and diplomatic commitments.

During the preparatory meeting held on Tuesday, the head of the Japanese delegation confirmed that Japan does not recognize what is referred to as the “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic,” noting that this entity has no influence on Japan’s policy regarding the situation in Western Sahara. He added that Japan’s invitation to participating countries in the conference was limited to those with which it has direct diplomatic relations, while the invitation for African Union members falls under its purview.

This clarification came just days after statements from Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, who reaffirmed Japan’s stance of not inviting this separatist entity to the conference, reminding everyone of his country’s unwavering position based on respect for international law and United Nations resolutions.

This stern statement reflects Japan’s commitment to its positions regarding major international issues, including the Western Sahara conflict, and reinforces its role as a strong supporter of stability and development on the African continent within the framework of TICAD.
