BCEAO Launches New Platform to Accelerate Instant Financial Transfers in West Africa
The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) has officially announced the launch of the interoperable instant payment platform (PI-SPI), a new regional infrastructure aimed at speeding up real-time financial transfers within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA).
According to the financial institution, the platform, expected to commence operations in September, will enable instant, secure, and interoperable transactions between bank customers, microfinance institutions, and electronic money service providers, regardless of the type of account used.
Pilot tests for the platform began on June 5, involving a sample of customers and partners to validate the system’s effectiveness before its broader rollout.
This initiative is part of a strategy to modernize financial systems within the union, aiming to enhance financial inclusion by facilitating access to reliable and efficient payment services in the region.
BCEAO confirmed that the list of financial institutions participating in the platform will gradually expand, depending on their adherence to interoperability and cybersecurity standards.
This step aligns with the central bank’s commitment to developing a modern, inclusive, and robust financial sector that can meet the growing needs of populations and economies in West African countries regarding digital payment solutions.
