A new maritime line enhances Moroccan exports to Europe
Icelandic shipping company Samskip has announced the launch of a new shipping route connecting Moroccan ports to those in Northwestern Europe. This move aims to bolster Morocco’s presence as a strategic supplier of agricultural products, particularly fruits and vegetables, to European markets experiencing increasing demand for these goods during periods of local production decline.
The company has signed an agreement with the Moroccan Fruit Office to lay the groundwork for long-term cooperation ensuring the continuity of fresh product exports from Morocco to Europe, leveraging the advanced infrastructure of Moroccan ports and the Kingdom’s advantageous geographical location. This agreement marks a shift in the export methods of these products, replacing traditional land routes with more efficient and environmentally friendly refrigerated marine services.
The new line has been designed to meet the requirements for transporting temperature-sensitive products, with shipments being made in 45-foot refrigerated containers to ensure quality preservation and reduce delivery times through a door-to-door service, while cutting carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional transport methods.
The Port of Rotterdam, serving as the logistical gateway for the Samskip line, facilitates the rapid routing of shipments to key European markets such as Norway, Sweden, Poland, Finland, and the Baltic States, providing Moroccan exports with greater flexibility to reach multiple destinations in a short time.
This project contributes to enhancing the competitiveness of Moroccan products and reshaping food supply chains between Europe and Africa by offering more flexible and environmentally friendly transport alternatives in light of the climatic and economic challenges faced by the global agricultural sector.
