A summer day at “Imi N’Tarka” beach in the municipality of Mirleft, in the Sidi Ifni region, turned into a tragic human disaster when a member of the auxiliary forces drowned while saving a child who was on the verge of death due to strong waves.
The victim, in his thirties, was on a brief vacation when he spotted the child struggling to stay afloat. He quickly rushed in to save him, successfully bringing the child to shore, but the powerful currents pulled him back into the sea, and he could not survive.
Local authorities and civil protection were alerted, and the child was rescued and taken to the health center, while the search operation for the drowned man’s body continued for hours before it was recovered and transported to the morgue at the regional hospital in Sidi Ifni.
The young man’s departure left a profound shock among the residents and his colleagues, and his sacrifice was viewed as a rare example of selflessness, especially since he was not performing any official duty at the time of the incident.
This tragic event has reignited calls for strengthening rescue and monitoring teams at seasonal beaches, particularly during peak times, amid a noted shortage of lifeguard personnel and inadequate safety conditions that threaten the lives of beachgoers.
