Unprecedented Rise in Electricity Consumption Due to Air Conditioners During the Recent Heat Wave
The national electrical system recorded its highest peak demand on June 30, due to the increased use of air conditioners during the intense heat wave that affected the country.
Leila Benali, the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, confirmed that this peak reached approximately 7.9 gigawatts, marking an increase of nearly 5% compared to the same period in 2024.
The minister, in response to a parliamentary question regarding the funding of the national market for energy-efficient air conditioners, predicted that this pressure on the national electrical grid would continue as temperatures rise in the coming days.
She noted that a joint decision was signed with the Minister of Industry and Trade in September 2024, establishing minimum energy performance levels and mandatory energy labeling for air conditioners, particularly in urban areas. She emphasized that energy performance criteria for buildings have also been set, requiring continuous updates due to climate changes.
Regarding mountainous and rural areas, the minister indicated that her ministry is working in partnership with the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency to encourage a return to using local and traditional building materials, stating that buildings inspired by the energy-efficient stone wall technique help maintain moderate indoor temperatures, ranging between 15 and 25 degrees, even in regions experiencing extreme heat.
