The new American ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan III, praised King Mohammed VI as a “respected leader and friend of the United States,” commending his role in promoting regional stability. This statement was made during his confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Buchan indicated that Morocco is a cornerstone of American national security, hosting the largest joint military exercises by U.S. Africa Command, known as “African Lion,” and playing an active role in combating terrorism. He emphasized his commitment to enhancing security relations between the two countries, noting that the treaty of peace and friendship between Morocco and the United States dates back over 240 years, reflecting a strong historical partnership.
The ambassador further characterized Morocco as an ideal economic partner, calling for increased American investments in sectors such as technology, transportation, energy, and agriculture. He reiterated his country’s support for the Moroccan autonomy proposal as a fair and lasting solution to the conflict in Western Sahara, expressing his dedication to facilitating negotiations between the parties involved.
It is worth mentioning that Duke Buchan III was appointed last March by President Donald Trump and comes with extensive diplomatic experience, having served as the U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Andorra, in addition to a career in finance and business.
