Gas Pipeline Project Between Nigeria and Morocco Enters Critical Phase After Completing Studies

The Minister of Energy Transition, Leila Benali, has announced the completion of technical studies and preliminary engineering work for the giant gas pipeline project linking Nigeria and Morocco, paving the way for the anticipated final investment decision before the end of 2025.

This strategic pipeline stretches over 6,000 kilometers, passing through thirteen West African countries, marking a significant step as the project enters a new phase after months of intense studies and final route determination.

The project, with an estimated cost of $25 billion, aims to transport between 15 to 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually, catering to the needs of around 400 million people, and is considered one of the largest energy infrastructure initiatives on the continent.

Benali stated that a joint Moroccan-Nigerian company is being established to lead the construction, operations, and maintenance efforts, with both parties aiming to make the investment decision in the last quarter of this year.

In addition to its energy aspects, the pipeline also holds significant developmental stakes, as it is expected to enhance the industrial and digital development of the involved countries and consolidate Morocco’s position as an energy hub connecting Sub-Saharan Africa with Europe and the Atlantic Ocean.

Alongside the project, Rabat has launched a call for expressions of interest to establish a national natural gas network, connecting the cities of Nador, Kenitra, Mohammedia, and Dakhla in preparation for linking them with the continental pipeline.

With the route confirmed and studies completed, the project is advancing toward tangible realization on the ground, holding the potential to bring about a qualitative transformation in the energy landscape of West African nations and even Europe.
