The French Parliament Reconsiders the Withdrawal of Privileges Granted to Algerians

- in International

The French Parliament is set to discuss a new bill aimed at abolishing the 1968 and 2013 agreements which grant exceptional privileges to Algerians, whether residing in France or wishing to settle there.

This proposal was introduced by the far-right MP Eric Ciotti, who argued that these agreements are inequitable, claiming that France does not benefit from them, particularly given Algeria’s refusal to cooperate with his country regarding the deportation of illegal Algerian migrants.

The proposal criticizes the advantages and facilities afforded to Algerian migrants compared to individuals of other nationalities, exemplified by the right to reside for ten years after one year of marriage to a French citizen, as well as the ease of family reunification, which the far-right considers a “gateway to immigration.”

The French MP has called for a strict stance from his government and the implementation of a series of stringent measures, such as halting visa issuances and freezing bilateral cooperation, in order to establish a new immigration policy.
