The African Union has renewed its confidence in Moroccan Ambassador Mohammed Belhaj by appointing him as the special representative of the Commission President and head of the liaison office in Sudan. This decision reflects the ongoing appreciation for Moroccan capabilities and its commitment to promoting peace and stability on the continent.
The reappointment, issued by Commission President Moussa Faki Mahamat, extends the initial mandate given by his predecessor in 2019, reaffirming Morocco’s pivotal role in managing African crises and supporting political transitions.
Ambassador Belhaj, who previously served as Morocco’s ambassador to Sudan, possesses a rich diplomatic background and deep understanding of the situation in the country, along with significant experience in mediation and transition management, enhancing his capacity to play an effective role within the African Union.
This move illustrates the growing trust in Morocco’s approach based on dialogue and preventive diplomacy, as he worked during Morocco’s presidency of the Peace and Security Council in September 2019 to support Sudan’s return to the continental organization after its suspension, efforts that received significant African and international praise.
This appointment is particularly important in the context of the tense regional situation, where there is a pressing need to support peace efforts, promote national reconciliation, and rebuild institutions, priorities that align Morocco’s commitment with the objectives of the African Union.
