Morocco has achieved an unprecedented medical milestone by successfully implanting the first wireless cardiac regulator, AVEIR™, in Africa, marking a revolutionary step in the treatment of heart rhythm disorders.

On July 23, 2025, the city of Casablanca witnessed a significant medical achievement as a Moroccan medical team at the “Jirada Oasis” clinic performed the first of its kind operation in Morocco and Africa to implant the AVEIR™ wireless cardiac regulator, a groundbreaking move that underscores Morocco’s leadership in embracing the latest medical innovations.

The procedure was carried out under the supervision of Professor Abdel Hamid Mustaghfir, one of the leading specialists in interventional cardiology. This implantation represents a scientific leap in the methods of treating heart rhythm disorders, utilizing wireless technology implanted directly within the heart via catheterization, eliminating the need for any surgical incision or traditional wires. This reduces complication risks and speeds up patient recovery.

In this context, Professor Mustaghfir stated: “This implantation represents a turning point in the development of cardiac healthcare in Morocco. Access to such advanced technology allows patients to benefit from safe and effective solutions without surgical consequences, enhancing the independence of the Moroccan healthcare system with local competencies.”

The AVEIR™ device, developed by the American company Abbott, received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March 2022. It is one of the latest devices worldwide for treating slow or irregular heartbeats, featuring the capability for removal or upgrade to a dual-chamber system as needed, providing significant flexibility in managing fluctuating medical conditions.

Adel Jamali, general manager of Abbott’s Cardiac Systems unit for the Middle East and Africa, expressed pride in this achievement, saying: “Today we see Morocco transforming into an advanced center for cardiac care in the region. The introduction of the AVEIR™ device to the Moroccan market represents a strategic step in expanding access to innovative medical technologies that enhance patient health and improve their quality of life.”

This success reflects the result of a collaborative effort between the global company Abbott and its local partner, SOMA MEDICAL, part of the VICENNE Group. This partnership enables Moroccan medical teams to benefit from ongoing technical and scientific support and access the latest therapeutic solutions.

This type of operation is expected to reduce the complications associated with traditional surgeries, positioning Morocco among the leading countries in adopting wireless implantable medical solutions, thus opening new horizons in the field of heart disease in Africa.
