Portugal Reaffirms Support for the Autonomy Initiative

In the context of the international dynamics led by King Mohammed VI that support Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and the autonomy plan, the Portuguese Republic expressed “full support for the autonomy initiative, considering it the most serious, legitimate, and credible basis for resolving this dispute.”

This position was articulated in a joint statement adopted by Nasser Bourita, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, and Paulo Rangel, the Portuguese State Minister for Foreign Affairs, following their meeting on Tuesday in Lisbon.

The joint statement emphasized that Portugal recognizes the importance of this issue for Morocco, as well as the serious and credible efforts made by the Kingdom within the framework of the United Nations to reach a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.

The two ministers reaffirmed their support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2756, which underscored the role and responsibility of the parties in seeking a realistic, practical, and lasting political solution based on consensus.

With its new stance, Portugal has sent a clear signal confirming its alignment with the growing international consensus around the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, which is in harmony with the strong dynamics led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
