On the Throne Day, the King Calls for Brotherhood with Algeria and Affirms that the Moroccan Sahara is an Inviolable Right
In a high-profile address on the anniversary of the Throne Day, His Majesty King Mohammed VI reaffirmed Morocco’s steadfast positions on several strategic issues, primarily its relationship with neighboring Algeria and the ongoing resolution of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
A Genuine Openness Toward Algeria and a Call for Responsible Dialogue
In a brotherly and sincere tone, His Majesty expressed his continuous commitment to extending a hand toward Algeria, affirming that the Algerian people remain a brotherly nation, linked to Moroccans by deep human and historical ties, as well as by their shared language, religion, and common destiny.
The King’s speech stated, “As King of Morocco, my position is clear and unwavering; the Algerian people are a brotherly nation. Therefore, I have always sought to extend a hand to our brothers in Algeria and expressed Morocco’s readiness for open and responsible dialogue—brotherly and sincere—on various issues pending between our two countries.”
This stance reflects a genuine desire from the Moroccan side to move beyond the political stalemate that overshadows bilateral relations, aiming to build a united Arab Maghreb that transcends temporary disputes for the sake of strategic integration and regional cooperation.
A Strong Commitment to the Maghreb Union
The address did not merely call for dialogue but also linked it to a broader vision involving the revival of the Maghreb Union, which has remained stagnant for decades. His Majesty emphasized that the future of this regional bloc depends on a historical reconciliation between Morocco and Algeria, describing the engagement of both countries as a fundamental condition for achieving any joint Maghreb progress.
Growing International Support for the Autonomy Initiative
On another front, the speech highlighted the political and diplomatic gains Morocco has achieved regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, noting the increasing international support for the autonomy initiative proposed by Rabat as a final and realistic political solution to the dispute.
In this context, His Majesty praised the constructive positions articulated by some friendly countries, including the United Kingdom and the Republic of Portugal, which have explicitly supported the Moroccan initiative within the framework of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its southern regions.
The King did not merely acknowledge this support but emphasized that Morocco remains committed to consensual solutions that ensure the dignity of all parties, stating: “As proud as we are of these positions, we confirm our commitment to finding a consensual solution, where no party is a winner or a loser, which preserves the dignity of all parties involved.”
A Forward-Looking Vision Based on Unity and Legitimacy
His Majesty’s speech on Throne Day carried clear messages to both domestic and international audiences, affirming Morocco’s steadfast positions and its desire for cooperation and openness while holding firm to national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
It was a speech that combined political realism with strategic wisdom, balancing the importance of dialogue with steadfast principles, ultimately embodying a comprehensive royal vision aimed at building a unified Maghreb future characterized by security, cooperation, and shared prosperity.
