Follow-up

Tarek Amzyan Mfidhal, the CEO of the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen), confirmed that the operation of the Noor Ouarzazate Complex since 2016 has represented a model experience in managing and operating major solar energy infrastructure, enabling Morocco to establish internationally recognized expertise.

Mfidhal explained in an interview with the Moroccan News Agency that, thanks to its national competencies, the kingdom has efficiently operated advanced solar stations, which has strengthened knowledge transfer and developed local capabilities in the renewable energy sector. He added that the experience was not limited to technical aspects but also included regional support mechanisms, particularly regarding funding mobilization and implementing developmental projects benefiting the local population.

Production Capacity Meeting the Needs of Millions

The Noor Ouarzazate Complex is among the largest projects on the continent, with a total production capacity of 582 megawatts, equivalent to the household consumption of approximately 2.2 million Moroccan citizens. The complex annually helps avoid the emission of about 900,000 tons of carbon dioxide, reflecting Morocco’s strong commitment to combating climate change.

Creating Job Opportunities and Transferring Skills

Mfidhal noted that the project has created thousands of jobs during the construction phase, especially for local labor, while ensuring sustainable employment in maintenance, security, and operations during the operational phase, in addition to transferring skills to the region’s youth.

Masen relied on national companies at various stages of the project, allowing it to exceed pre-set industrial integration targets, involving local companies in transportation and logistical services.

Development Projects Benefiting the Community

The spokesperson confirmed that the complex has contributed, alongside its energy role, to launching a strong social and developmental dynamic by implementing over 180 projects between 2010 and 2025, benefiting more than 110,000 people directly or indirectly.

These projects included vital areas such as education, health, infrastructure, water, public lighting, and supporting local civil society, thereby reinforcing community stability and comprehensive development in the project’s environment.

A Center for Research and Innovation

Moreover, the Noor Ouarzazate Complex houses a platform dedicated to research and development, solidifying its position as a strategic lever for innovation in clean energy, contributing to sharing advanced technology and enhancing scientific sovereignty in this vital sector.

This project is part of the royal initiative related to energy transition, which operates under the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, aimed at achieving more inclusive and sustainable growth, enhancing energy sovereignty, and creating job opportunities.
